Activities

Skeet Shooting

With our friends at The Gold River Rod and Gun Club our guests are able to enjoy a day of sporting clays at the range located approximately 10 minutes from The Lodge.

Sporting Clays is a wonderful sport that can be enjoyed by all - participant or spectator. It is considered an international sport practiced by hunters and non-hunters alike.

The Gold River Rod and Gun Club offers a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of helpful tips and advice from one of our local members. Sharpen your skills before heading out for an exciting day of pheasant hunting at Evansdale Farm.

Golf

The Gold River Golf Course is located a short distance downstream of The Lodge and offers a relaxing and challenging golf experience. Surrounded by snow capped mountains, Gold River Golf Course sits amidst a thick vibrant forest of hemlock, pine, red cedar and Douglas fir. Half the fun of playing this course is in the spectacular scenery one encounters.

Of Gold River's many good holes, its 1st must be considered its best. At 380 yards this par four doglegs left and follows the contours of the river, which provides both a scenic backdrop and a dangerous hazard. At nine holes, guests often have time to fit in a round after a days fishing and before a spectacular meal back at The Lodge.

Hiking

In town trails offer exhilaration, solitude, views of bald eagles, deer, pristine rivers, alluring canyons and mountainous splendor. Guests of The Lodge can explore Peppercorn Trail which is conveniently located minutes from The Lodge. Another great hike is Antler Lake Nature Walk. This trail is located 5 minutes from The Lodge.

The Lodge at Gold River is also located within close proximity to the many challenging trails of Strathcona Provincial Park. Trails range in degree of difficulty and distance from day hikes to multi day mountaineering expeditions.

Eight miles downstream from The Lodge are the waters of Muchalat Inlet and the famous Nootka Sound. Nootka Island located at the mouth of Nootka Sound, offers hikers an incredible trail along rugged west coast beaches that is one of the areas greatest treasures. Access to Nootka Island is by boat or float plane so it holds a remote charm to those who venture there.

Upana Caves

The Upana Caves are located 17km northwest of Gold River on the Head Bay Forest Road. Driving time is approximately 25 minutes from The Lodge at Gold River. The Lodge offers our guest shuttle service to and from the caves. Upana Caves are several caves within one group. Altogether the caves have fifteen known entrances and 450 meters or 1500 feet of passages. There are both self guided and organized tours available. The interior of the caves remain wild and underdeveloped. At one point there is an underground river in the caves. The Upana Caves are a year round experience no matter what the temperature is outside as the temperature inside averages approximately 7 degrees Celsius.

Hot Springs Cove

Guests of The Lodge at Gold River can unwind after a day of saltwater fishing or spend the day relaxing at Hot Springs Cove which is still unspoiled in its natural state. Hot Springs Cove is located in Maquinna National Park on the remote northern end of Clayquot Sound. Hot Springs Cove is only accessible by air or sea and will require you to make approximate 2km hike into the springs.

Cultural Tours

Guests at The Lodge at Gold River can enjoy Nootka Sound day trips to Friendly Cove aboard the MV Uchuck III and explore the historic west coast on a working coastal vessel. Passengers will witness the day to day activities of loading and unloading of equipment and supplies to remote logging camps and maritime outposts.

During the summer months the MV Uchuck III provides day trips to Friendly Cove, ancestral home of the Mowachaht people. Rich in Native and European history, Friendly Cove (Yuquot) was first visited by Captain James Cook in 1778. There he traded with Chief Maquinna for otter furs. This was the beginning of the lucrative fur trade that introduced Europeans to the west coast of Vancouver Island. Today, Friendly Cove offers its visitors campgrounds, hiking trails, and tours. Nootka Sound day trips to Friendly Cove leave Gold River on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 10:00am and arrive at approximately 4:00pm. On Saturdays the vessel arrives at approximately 5:30pm.

The Lodge at Gold River offers transportation to and from the dock which is located approximately fifteen minutes from The Lodge.
